The Essence of Worship: Giving Back to God (September 27, 2023)

In 2013, I penned the words: “Worship is the only true thing that we can Give back to God.” Years later, this belief still stands strong and resonates within me. Let’s revisit the essence of worship and ponder what it means in today’s world.

In Psalm 116:12-19 (NIV), the question arises: “What shall I return to the Lord for all his goodness to me?” The psalmist offers a profound response. Not only through our struggles or pleas for rescue but through praising His might and expressing our deep reverence, we give back to God.

Worship should be more than just a litany of our desires or concerns. It should be a celebration of God’s grandeur, an expression of our awe for His greatness. It’s about telling God how profoundly amazing He is and appreciating Him for all that He is.

God longs for our praises. He desires our acknowledgment of His glory. Can we fathom the joy it brings Him when we passionately and genuinely express our awe in our worship?

However, let’s not fall into the trap of seeing worship merely as a means to be touched by God. Worship is about giving back, not about receiving. “Give unto the Lord, all you families of nations, give unto the Lord glory and strength” (Psalm 96:7, NKJV). Worship opens doors to His goodness (Psalm 34, Amplified Bible).

We can also give to God through prayer (H8605תְּפִלָּה tᵉphillâh, tef-il-law’; from H6419; intercession, supplication; by implication, a hymn:—prayer), turning our prayer into acts of worship, boldly and loudly, every day. Strong’s Number H8605 matches the Hebrew תְּפִלָּה (tᵊp̄illâ),
which occurs 77 times in 70 verses in the

In Ezekiel 29:21 (NIV), God speaks of stirring up fresh hope and providing bold and confident words for His worshippers. It’s time for us, the church, to return to true heart worship—for God, about God—so He can continue to pour out His blessings on our lives and communities.

In Psalm 22:12-31 (Amplified Bible), we see a vivid picture of worship. It’s not merely about seeking rescue; it’s about embracing a praise-filled life and acknowledging God’s presence in our midst.

Let’s strive for authentic, heartfelt worship, where we celebrate God’s glory, acknowledge His love, and find solace in His faithfulness. For in this worship, we truly give back to God.

God Bless!
